China has allowed imports of non-basmati rice from India, with a first 100-tonne consignment set to ship from Nagpur to state-owned COFCO. Nineteen Indian rice mills and processing units have been registered for export under a phytosanitary protocol signed in June.
Opening China as a new buyer for Indian non-basmati rice adds export demand for Indian rice, though the initial volume is very small and the impact on global rice prices is limited for now.
