FAO's country brief reports late and erratic monsoon rains have delayed kharif paddy planting, with area about 12 percent below last year in early August. Major floods in the north and south have caused localized crop and livelihood damage, while rice exports for 2019 are forecast at a high level.
Planting shortfalls and flood damage could trim Indian rice output, but high forecast exports keep global rice supply comfortable, so the price effect is modest.
