Mexico's Senate passed a law promoting and protecting native corn, designating over 60 varieties as national heritage and requiring labels showing whether corn is native, hybrid or genetically modified. The law is framed as preventing intellectual plundering of indigenous communities.
Labeling and heritage protection for native corn may slow adoption of hybrid and GM varieties in Mexico, a large corn import market, so the price effect is limited.
