Mexico's government plans to ban imports of genetically modified corn, according to retiring environment minister Victor Toledo. Mexico buys about 20 million tonnes of corn a year from the U.S., roughly 95% of its purchases, nearly all of it GM.
A ban on GM corn would remove a large share of U.S. export demand and could pressure U.S. corn prices. Specialists warn it could also raise Mexican food prices, so the policy's real impact depends on whether it is enacted.
