A report by Iowa State, North Carolina State and the National Pork Producers Council found that retail pork prices are rising because of higher transport costs, supply bottlenecks, and labor costs. Packing capacity fell 2.5% after a federal court order limited line speeds.
The economists said packer and producer profits are not a major cause of the price increases.
Higher costs and a labor shortage reduce packing capacity, which supports pork prices through the chain. The finding that margins are not driving prices suggests the increases are cost-led and may persist.
