The Australian dollar fell as US dollar demand dominated markets amid the Ukraine crisis, despite strong January retail sales. Reports suggested several Russian banks could fail after being excluded from SWIFT, and further sanctions were expected.
The RBA was expected to hold rates at its meeting on Tuesday.
Risk-off flows toward the US dollar weaken the AUD and can pressure Australian export-currency commodity prices in USD terms, while sanctions add uncertainty to global trade flows.
