A possible rail strike set for Friday could halt much of U.S. freight train service, with Amtrak canceling long-distance routes from Thursday. The Maryland Transit Administration warned commuters of disruption, and CSX said delays and suspensions were possible.
Industry estimates suggested about 40% of U.S. freight shipments could stop abruptly.
A strike of this scale would disrupt grain, feed and fertilizer movements by rail and cause cargo backlogs at ports such as Baltimore. Feed buyers would face higher logistics costs and delivery uncertainty.
