India began October with about 2.4 million tonnes of DAP in stock, after September imports of 994,000 tonnes exceeded domestic offtake of 967,000 tonnes. Stocks are about 700,000 tonnes higher than a year earlier, following a strong kharif import season of 4 million tonnes.
Imports of about 2.2 million tonnes would be needed in October-December to keep stocks steady.
A large Indian DAP stockbuild reduces near-term import demand pressure in a major phosphate market, which can soften global DAP pricing. The need for further imports in the fourth quarter still provides underlying support for phosphate prices.
