Rice prices have traded sideways with little momentum after the December USDA supply and demand report made only minor changes. Total rice exports were trimmed slightly, raising expected ending stocks.
Early projections call for 300,000 to 400,000 more US rice acres in 2018, recapturing part of the 650,000 acres lost in 2017.
Larger 2018 US acreage would expand supply, and since 2017's price gain was mainly supply driven, that could pressure prices lower. Weak export demand adds to the bearish case.
