Two proposed projects aim to expand containerized soybean exports: a greenfield container and intermodal terminal at Plaquemines Port in Louisiana, and a new class of self-propelled inland vessels to shuttle containers from upriver terminals. The container port is at least three to four years from operation and still needs major capital.
These projects are long-term infrastructure plans with no near-term supply effect, so they have little immediate price impact on soybeans or freight rates.
