SEI and Global Canopy researchers argue that traceable supply chains are needed to halt deforestation linked to soy and other commodities. They note that soy production has grown from about 27 million to about 350 million metric tons since 1960, and that China and the EU are the main export markets.
Growing demand for traceable soy, and the expansion into Brazil's Cerrado, could raise compliance costs for soy meal supply over time. Their commentary is not a near-term price driver.
