A Soy Transportation Coalition analysis by Informa Economics found that dredging the Mississippi River Ship Channel from 45 to 50 feet offered the greatest infrastructure benefit to U.S. soybean competitiveness. The 256-mile stretch from Baton Rouge to the Gulf handles 60 percent of U.S. soybean exports and 59 percent of corn exports.
The Big River Coalition is promoting the deeper channel.
A deeper channel could lower per-bushel shipping costs and improve Gulf export competitiveness for soybeans and corn, which supports farm-gate basis over the long run. The effect on futures prices is minimal in the near term because the project is only proposed.
