U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told the Senate Finance Committee that talks with China had entered their final weeks but a deal could not be taken for granted. Sticking points include U.S. demands for strict enforcement provisions, including the right to impose new tariffs unilaterally.
Lighthizer said he could not predict success at this point.
Uncertainty over whether a deal will be reached keeps Chinese buying of U.S. soybeans and pork subdued. Prices remain sensitive to every headline on the negotiations.
