Inland shippers are preparing for IMO 2020, which takes effect January 1, 2020 and cuts the marine fuel sulfur cap from 3.5% to 0.5%. A fuel distributor expects most operators to switch to 0.5% distillate, and US refiners are expected to export more compliant diesel.
Expected export demand for 0.5% diesel could tighten domestic distillate supply that trucks and barges use. That points to higher diesel costs for inland freight of grain and feed.
