Urea in New Orleans rose to $720 per tonne by October 6, up from $411 in early August, and Egypt's price nearly doubled to $830. European nitrogen producers are curtailing output because natural gas prices spiked to $35-40 per MMBtu.
Gas costs above $900 per tonne of urea make European production unprofitable without subsidies, so output is being shut in. That supply loss is the main driver of higher nitrogen prices worldwide.
