Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) member cooperatives helped export dairy products equivalent to nearly 1 billion pounds of milk in 2019, according to the National Milk Producers Federation. Contracted sales included 48.9 million pounds of American-type cheese, 46.1 million pounds of whole milk powder, and 5 million pounds of butter.
The FDA also reopened its comment period on a proposed rule that would allow fluid ultrafiltered milk in certain cheeses.
Sustained US dairy export assistance supports demand for milk solids and helps clear domestic surplus, which is mildly supportive for milk prices. The FDA proposal could expand outlets for ultrafiltered milk, but its effect on prices would be gradual.
