India's total farm exports fell 9.1% to $17.29 billion in April-September 2019-20 from a year earlier. Non-basmati and basmati rice exports both declined sharply, with the drop linked to US sanctions on Iran, which had stranded shipments and delayed payments.
Raw cotton exports fell 76%, while spice and sugar exports grew.
Lower Indian rice exports, especially basmati to Iran, reduce demand on the world rice market and add downward pressure on prices. The cotton export drop also signals weaker demand for cotton-based feed products.
