The European Palm Oil Alliance (EPOA) released a position paper calling for EU-wide regulatory measures to make deforestation-free palm oil the norm in Europe. It cited 83% certified sustainable palm oil imported for food in 2018 and backed due diligence obligations for companies placing palm oil on the EU market.
Industry support for mandatory due diligence signals that European palm oil demand may shift toward certified supply, which could widen premiums for sustainable palm oil over conventional product.
