Mexico's Secretariat of Agriculture said the GMO corn ban will include animal feed imports, after officials met with supply chain and producers on January 15. The ministry plans to raise domestic yellow corn output through the Maiz para Mexico initiative, reducing reliance on imports.
US corn exports to Mexico were worth $2.7 billion in 2019.
Confirmation that feed corn is included removes a key uncertainty and puts a large share of US corn exports to Mexico at risk, which is bearish for CORN. Expanded Mexican domestic production would reduce import demand over time.
