Wisconsin livestock specialist Jeff Swenson summarizes USDA reports showing cattle on feed less than half a percent above a year ago, and August cattle placements up 100.4%, with a larger-than-expected share of light feeders. Beef cow harvest is up 13.1% year to date, and the Choice cutout fell $4.80 to $248.63.
Frozen beef supplies rose 24.3%, though they remain below 2019 levels.
Heavier placements and higher cow slaughter add to beef supply, which pressures the cutout and future cattle values. Frozen stocks still sit below normal, which limits the downside.
