The Waterways Journal's annual review describes 2022 as a year of record drought and heat across the Northern Hemisphere that halted river traffic on most major commercial waterways. Mississippi River levels fell sharply in late summer, cutting loads and tow sizes, although the barge industry kept cargoes moving.
The review also notes completed Lower Mississippi deepening and New Orleans flood protection work.
Low water restricted barge loadings and pushed freight rates higher, raising transport costs for US grain and oilseed exports moving through the Gulf. Those costs flow back into lower bids for origin grain and higher delivered prices for feed buyers inland.
