Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Morocco is building a national network of farmers and soil experts to test soil nutrients and give tailored fertilizer recommendations. Morocco is the first African country to produce soil fertility maps, and the approach is spreading to other countries.
The effort aims to expand African crop productivity.
Better soil testing and targeted fertilizer use could gradually raise phosphate fertilizer demand across Africa over the long run. The impact on prices in the near term is minimal.
