A missile attack on a British container vessel carrying fertilizer in the Red Sea has led ships to reroute south around Africa, adding time and cost. StoneX's Josh Linville warned of rising tensions in the Persian Gulf, a major nitrogen export route.
He noted that about half of globally exported urea comes from the Middle East and North Africa.
Longer routes and the risk of Persian Gulf disruption could raise freight costs and cut urea supply, pushing fertilizer prices higher. Buyers should expect upward pressure on nitrogen costs if the situation escalates.
