Indian rice exporters have received customs notices demanding payment of duty differentials on shipments made over the past 18 months. The demands stem from a shift from FOB value to transaction value for calculating the 20% export duties imposed in 2022 and 2023.
The tax demands could cripple India's rice shipments, the world's largest rice export flow, tightening global supply and supporting rice prices.
