China's yuan edged up 0.11% to 6.9053 per dollar on Tuesday after strong manufacturing data, but was still on track for its first monthly decline since July. The dollar was heading for its biggest monthly gain since July as the Middle East conflict boosted safe-haven demand.
The PBOC set its midpoint at 6.9194.
A weaker yuan against a stronger dollar raises the cost of dollar-priced feed imports for China, which can soften its import appetite at the margin. Safe-haven dollar strength also tends to pressure dollar-denominated commodity prices.
