Water levels on the lower Mississippi at Memphis rose to about 0.47 feet after rain, easing barge restrictions after recording near-record lows in October. The Coast Guard reported no barge backups at Memphis that week.
Levels between St. Louis and Cairo still pose problems, so movement has not returned to normal.
Higher river levels allow fuller barge loads, which should lower freight rates and ease pressure on Gulf export basis. The gains are partial while the stretch from St. Louis to Cairo stays constrained.
