Chinese importers booked about 7.4 million tonnes of mainly South American soybeans for October shipment and 1 million tonnes for November. U.S. soybeans were about 80 to 90 cents a bushel cheaper than Brazilian beans, but China's 23% tariff added about $2 a bushel to their landed cost.
The tariff gap leaves U.S. soybeans uncompetitive in China despite their lower price, so Brazil captures the bulk of Chinese demand. This keeps pressure on U.S. soybean export sales and prices.
