Iowa State Extension researchers linked corn "edge effect" yield losses to micro-climate conditions and hot, dry, windy weather in July and August. Some farmers reported severe losses along field edges, with one field yielding zero on the first combine pass.
Edge losses reduce harvested corn volumes in drought years, adding to the supply effect of weather stress. The finding is mainly agronomic and has limited effect on market prices.
