USDA's Economic Research Service released its January 2018 Rice Outlook, analyzing US and global rice markets using the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates projections. The 2017/18 medium- and short-grain ending stocks forecast was lowered by 1.7 million cwt to 9.3 million cwt, down 19 percent from a year earlier.
Lower medium- and short-grain ending stocks signal tighter US supplies, which supports rough rice prices. The change is modest, so the effect on the market is limited.
