FAO forecasts Vietnam's 2016 paddy output at 43.9 million tonnes, 3 percent below the 2015 record, due to saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta and floods in the north. It forecasts 2017 rice exports at 7.1 million tonnes, up 10 percent, and 2016 maize output at 5 million tonnes, down 5 percent.
A smaller Vietnamese crop is partly offset by expected higher 2017 exports, leaving the rice outlook balanced to slightly supportive for Asian rice prices.
