A late freeze with snow and frost in western Kansas and the Oklahoma Panhandle produced a 28-cent one-day wheat rally, completing a 55-cent move. The article estimates the frost could cut hard red winter wheat output by about 2 percent, or roughly 18 million bushels.
Funds had built record short positions and were reported buying 25,000 contracts on the rally day.
An 18 million bushel cut to hard red winter wheat reduces ending stocks and supports K.C. wheat futures. Heavy fund short-covering amplified the move, so prices may stay volatile until yield losses are confirmed.
