Randy Strychar of Ag Commodity Research and Saskatchewan oat grower Shawna Mathieson both forecast Canadian oat plantings for 2018 will fall 2% to 5% or about 5.5% from 2017, disputing AAFC's March 22 projection of a 2% rise to 1.325 million hectares. Strychar noted that 975,000 tonnes of oats will carry into 2018-19, up from 703,000 tonnes a year earlier.
A large carry-in stock points to continued pressure on oat prices, while smaller plantings would tighten supply later. The conflicting forecasts leave the size of the 2018 Canadian crop uncertain.
