Southern Alberta seeding started slightly late, and analysts have not yet seen producers switching acres to shorter-season feed barley. Statistics Canada's April report projected barley area rising to 6.1 million acres from 5.8 million and spring wheat to 18.2 million from 15.8 million.
A larger barley and wheat acreage would add feed grain supply next year and could pressure prices, though seeding delays could still shift acres toward barley.
