South Africa's foot-and-mouth disease status has been temporarily suspended by the World Organisation for Animal Health after FMD was found in the Vhembe District of Limpopo. Neighbouring countries including Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland have banned South African red meat exports.
Regional export bans cut demand for South African beef and push local meat prices lower, while the disease risk adds uncertainty to livestock trade across southern Africa.
