Mexico has banned genetically modified corn and plans to phase out GMO corn imports and glyphosate use by January 2024, according to a decree published December 31, 2020. The government says the aim is food security and sovereignty.
Agricultural industry groups criticized the decision, while organic growers praised it, and it was unclear whether livestock feed imports were covered.
If GMO corn imports are phased out, Mexico's demand for US corn, which dominates its import mix, would shrink, weighing on CORN export prices. The uncertainty over feed use is the key variable for buyers.
