A research study by Sytsma and Wilson, using 2000 to 2017 data, examines how Midwest corn shippers choose between barge and rail as distance to a waterway changes. Barge carried about 86 percent of combined barge and rail corn tonnage in the studied zones.
The findings show how barge access shapes corn freight competitiveness, but it is background research with no new supply or price shock, so the direct market effect is limited.
