An AgWeb feature reports that dredging the lower Mississippi from 45 to 50 feet could allow ships to load about 0.5 million more bushels of soybeans each, potentially adding $461 million annually to the US soybean industry. The Mississippi River Ship Channel Dredging Project started in 2020 and is scheduled for completion in 2022.
Deeper channels would lower per-bushel shipping costs for Gulf soybean exports over time, a structural improvement to export basis rather than an immediate price shock.
