The UN says Afghanistan's farmers and herders face famine-like conditions after most crops were lost to drought this year, with 18.8 million people unable to feed themselves daily. Aid agencies warn a second consecutive drought year is likely in 2022 as La Niña brings drier conditions.
Afghanistan is a small grain importer, so the humanitarian need has little effect on global feed prices. Continued drought concern is a minor supporting factor for regional wheat import demand.
