A report by the National Pork Producers Council, prepared by economists from Iowa State and NC State, concludes that higher US pork prices reflect strong demand, rising input costs, wages and supply chain bottlenecks rather than meatpacker concentration. Concentration is about 7% lower than five years ago, per the analysis.
The finding that pork prices are driven by fundamentals rather than packer margins suggests the price strength reflects real supply and demand tightness, which supports hog prices.
