US natural gas futures fell about 9% on September 15 after a bigger-than-expected storage build. The drop also followed a possible deal to avert a rail strike, after gas had jumped 10% the previous session on fears of a walkout.
The rail deal removed the risk of coal supply disruptions that had boosted gas demand. Gas prices are now driven mainly by the storage surplus, which weighs on energy costs for feed processors.
