India imposed a 20% duty on most raw non-basmati rice exports and a blanket ban on broken rice exports, effective September 9. Basmati and parboiled rice remain freely exportable.
The move follows wheat export curbs and concern about a poor harvest.
The curbs cover nearly half of India's rice export volume, so global supply tightens and prices are pushed higher. Buyers in importing countries will face higher rice costs.
