India defended its rice and wheat export bans at a WTO meeting in Geneva, where the US, EU and Senegal raised concerns about global market effects. India said the broken rice ban responds to a rise in exports that pressured domestic prices, and that the measures are temporary and under monitoring.
The wheat curbs were imposed in May to protect food security.
Continued international pressure is unlikely to reverse the curbs soon, so the restrictions keep rice and wheat export supply tight. Importers such as Senegal may need to source from other origins, supporting prices elsewhere.
