The August Ag Economists' Monthly Monitor from the University of Missouri and Farm Journal found most surveyed economists expect US cattle herd rebuilding not to start until Q2 2024 or later. The US beef cow herd is at its lowest since 1962.
Economists also flagged likely consolidation among cattle producers and meat processors.
A prolonged herd contraction keeps cattle supplies tight and supports higher cattle prices into 2024, which in turn affects cattle feeding economics and demand for feed.
