Costa Rica, working with Panama and the US, is fighting an invasive cattle screwworm outbreak first detected near the Panama border in July. Seven cases have been confirmed in cattle, sheep and a dog, and over 10 million sterile male flies were released by air.
Checkpoints have been set up to stop movement of infested livestock.
Livestock movement restrictions and disease control in Central America can tighten regional beef and cattle supply and add cost to producers. The effect on feed-grain prices is marginal, so the impact is limited to local livestock markets.
