A firm dollar pressured most Latin American currencies on April 18 as Federal Reserve officials signaled few rate cuts this year. The Chilean peso and Peruvian sol bucked the regional weakness, rising 1.3% and 0.6% against the dollar as copper hit a 22-month high.
The MSCI Latam currency index slipped about 0.2%.
Stronger dollar and higher US rates raise the cost of dollar-denominated imports for emerging markets, which can weigh on demand for feed imports in the region. Copper strength supports the Chilean and Peruvian currencies but does not directly move feed prices.
