CME live cattle futures hit lifetime highs on Monday for a fourth straight session after USDA's Cattle on Feed report showed December feedlot placements down 3% from a year earlier, against analyst expectations of no change. Feeder cattle also set lifetime highs before settling lower, and lean hogs firmed on stronger wholesale pork prices.
Fewer cattle entering feedlots points to tighter fed supplies ahead, which supports cattle futures and cash prices. Feeder cattle prices are also firm because of tight supply.
