CME feeder cattle futures fell to their lowest since March 20 after USDA's cattle on feed report showed April placements up 6% year over year, above analyst expectations. Cattle on feed as of May 1 were up about 2%, also above forecasts.
Packers were losing heavily per head.
Stronger-than-expected placements add feeder supply ahead of summer, pressuring feeder cattle prices and the value of feed demand tied to feedlot inventories.
