Economists Richard Brock and Joseph Kerns told the American Feed Industry Association conference that the US-China trade war and African Swine Fever in China could seriously hurt US soybean and pork producers. Brock said China has shifted its soybean supply to Brazil and Argentina and warned that this demand may not return.
He also criticized the proposed government payments to farmers as no substitute for lost export demand.
A lasting shift of Chinese soybean demand to South America would weigh on US soybean prices and export values. Reduced Chinese pork demand from ASF also adds downside pressure on US hog prices.
