The U.S. Meat Export Federation says China's pork market appears stable despite estimates that African Swine Fever has cut the hog herd by more than 20%. USMEF calculates the sow herd is down 22% and total hog inventory is down just under 21%.
Pork is on sale in Chinese cities with no empty shelves, and pork imports have declined while imports of other meats have risen.
Stable Chinese retail pork prices and full warehouses suggest the herd loss has not yet tightened supply enough to lift import demand. Until a supply gap appears, the effect on US hog prices is limited.
