On February 6, 2020, the European Commission opened a public consultation, open until March 4, 2020, on an initiative to minimise deforestation and forest degradation linked to products placed on the EU market. The consultation collects views from citizens, stakeholders and trading partners.
The initiative is still at the input stage with no binding rules yet.
Future EU due diligence rules could raise compliance costs and limit access for soy and palm oil supplies from deforestation-exposed origins. The consultation itself does not change near-term supply or demand.
